When Dorothy and Mel Tanner were living in New York, in 1963, they began a co-op gallery in Manhattan, named Granite Gallery. They also lived in a loft where they had studios: Dorothy for sculpting and Mel for painting.  Around 1964, Dorothy began to contact corporations asking them if they would like an art piece based on what the company did. They received several commissions:
