A long-time friend of Lumonics from South Florida had purchased light art of Dorothy Tanner and Mel Tanner over the years. His living room includes a wall sculpture, Star Map, some free-standing light sculptures, and some table-top sculptures including one of Dorothy’s water sculptures. He sent us a recent photo:

Brightly lit and right at home on C Street, new art now glows above travelers! Some of you might remember our very first Galleri Gallery exhibition, “Light and Sound” by Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery, which was on view when we opened in September of 2021. We’re thrilled to share that we’ve purchased a piece from Lumonics as a permanent addition to Convergence Station!
“Postscript” is a piece of futuristic light art that was completed by Mel Tanner in 1991, two years before he passed. It contains an abstract “script” that was something that began with Mel’s painting as early as the 1950s, before he began working with light. Like so much of his light art, Postscript looks two-dimensional from a distance but as you get closer to it, you see its depth as a three-dimensional wall sculpture.
Lumonics is among the first and longest-running light art studios in the U.S., originating in the 1960s. If you want to see more of their collection in person, head to their ongoing event called “[Lumonics] Immersed” that takes place Saturday evenings at their studio.
Have you seen “Postscript” in person on a recent visit?

The Meow Wolf Denver post also shared earlier examples of Mel’s script:
What an impact Dorothy Tanner had on people she met and that experienced her art! Dorothy was born 100 years ago today.
“Light has the power to create, define, and solidify; or leave in shadow that which we believe to be real.”
“The major challenge for me in art is to keep under control the tyranny of a logical mind. The spirit that moves me is capricious, unruly and irreverent. Most of my work grows out of intuitive impulse–the rest gets underway by just playing.”
