“Creatures From Left Field”
A sculpture display by Dorothy Tanner on display now at the Lakewood Cultural Center.
June 4 to June 30
Lakewood’s Heritage, Culture & the Arts Division is delighted to host this unique exhibit showcasing the work of internationally acclaimed sculptor Dorothy Tanner. “Creatures from Left Field,” which features fanciful light sculptures, marks the first time the collection has ever been presented and assembled as an exclusive installation.
Tanner’s free-standing sculptures and wall hangings use acrylic and LED lights as main ingredients to create luminous experiences for the viewer. Originally from New York, Tanner developed her own studio brand, “Lumonics,” which has found homes in California, Maine and Florida. In 2008, Tanner and her team of technicians relocated her studio from South Florida to Denver. Locally, her work has been featured at Denver International Airport, Museum of Outdoor Art and VERTIGO Art Space on Santa Fe Drive. “Light has the power to create, define and solidify, or leave in shadow that which we believe to be real,” said Tanner.
Tanner is currently collaborating with Lakewood Cultural Center regular David Taylor, artistic director and choreographer of the Zikr Dance Ensemble, on the “Lady of the Lake” ballet whereby she created a series of hand-held light sculptures for the dancers. The ballet will premiere at the Lakewood Cultural Center on Saturday, June 6.
This exhibit is free and open to the public in the Corner Gallery at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway (Wadsworth and Alameda). Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday. Please join us for a free opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 4. Visual Art/Dance: Looking at—and dancing
with—light sculptures
By Ray Mark Rinaldi, The Denver Post
Through June 30, 2015: Artist Dorothy Tanner is known for working in acrylic, a modern material that she imbues with timeless qualities through the addition of LED lights. Her sculptures, ranging from abstract shapes to, more recently, anthropomorphic figures, glow with a warm familiarity. Tanner’s new works come together for the exhibit “Creatures from Left Field” at the Lakewood Cultural Center. They’ll also serve as hand-held props for Zikr Dance Ensemble’s “Lady of the Lake,” which will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the center. The exhibit, through June 30, is free. Tickets for the dance are $16-$28. Lakewood Cultural Center, 480 S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood.

“Sculptor Dorothy Tanner’s work is best seen in the dark. That’s because the 92-year-old works with light, using materials like plexiglass to bend and blend vibrant rays of color. She’s been making art for more than 60 years.”

“My husband and I both loved your work! Colorful, fanciful, mysterious, so imaginative in design and exquisite in construction — it was just stunning. Since then, I’ve looked at your website, listened to the Colorado Matters interview with you, and become even more amazed by your lifetime of creativity. Needless to say, I now want to visit your Lumonics Gallery as soon as possible.”
