About Us:
The Lumonics Mind Spa is a concept developed by Dorothy Tanner (1923-2020) who wanted her light sculptures and those of her late husband Mel to be experienced as a total art installation that fosters a state of comfort, relaxation, and creativity.
Lumonics is among the earliest and longest-running light art projects in the U.S. We have an archive of over 50 years of light art to select for your location. We also provide original video art and music to complement the light sculptures to create an expanded multi-sensory experience.
Dorothy Tanner was the recipient of the Denver Mayor’s Award for Innovation in the Arts when she was 95. You can watch the video on this page that was produced by Denver Arts & Venues and presented on Rocky Mountain PBS.
For public exhibits, we will work with you to design a Lumonics Mind Spa to meet your particular needs and goals. Previous and current installations have designated hours that are open to the public. It can also be used for performances, presentations, classes, social gatherings, and meetings.

The art work can be seen from several windows of the Understudy Gallery at the intersection of Stout and 14th Street in the Denver Theatre District, with each angle of gazing providing another perspective. Understudy Gallery is adjacent to the Convention Center light rail stop and viewable to all from the train. It is truly a Light Intersection. *
This is a “fishbowl” style installation you can view anytime from the outside, but it is best experienced after dark.
Understudy is free-to-visit and open to all.
The exhibition will be part of the Downtown Festival of Lights during the holidays.
* Understudy is a first-of-its-kind arts and culture experimental space, located in Downtown Denver at the Colorado Convention Center.

Lumonics Mind Spa: Thornton
Arts & Culture Center
City of Thornton, CO
The Lumonics Mind Spa: Thornton was commissioned by the City of Thornton, Colorado, and opened in June, 2020 at its Arts & Culture Center and available to the public through late September. This is the first art installation in Thornton since the beginning of the pandemic.
“The traveling Lumonics Mind Spa, a meditative extravaganza of light art by Dorothy and Mel Tanner, with video art and music by Marc Billard and Dorothy Tanner, lands in Thornton this summer at the Thornton Arts & Culture Center, which is open for business with limitations. A maximum of ten people will be allowed to contemplate the art and let their minds free in the gallery at one time, and safety protocols will be enforced. Just the thing for folks who’ve been trapped in their houses for weeks.”
