Public Art

For Administrators of Public Spaces

Here are 4 categories in which Lumonics art can serve the community, all with links below.

1. Lumonics Mind Spas that can be as small as a room to as large as an entire art center
2. Individual light sculptures
3. Video art light projection on buildings and screens, both indoor and outdoor.
4. Outdoor Light Sculptures

1. The Lumonics Mind Spa is a concept developed by Dorothy Tanner (1923-2020) who wanted her light sculptures and those of her late husband Mel to be experienced as a total art installation that fosters a state of comfort and creativity. Dorothy Tanner was a recipient of the Denver Mayor’s Award for Innovation in the Arts.  Denver Arts & Venues produced the  video shown at the award ceremony,  also shown on Rocky Mountain PBS’s Arts District.

We will work with you to design a Lumonics Mind Spa to meet your particular needs and goals. In addition to the art exhibit, the space can also be used by the community to host performances, presentations, classes, social gatherings, and meetings.

Lumonics is among the earliest and longest-running light art projects in the U.S. (Wikipedia)  We have an archive of over 50 years of light art to select for your location. We also provide original video art and music to complement the light sculptures to create an expanded multi-sensory experience.

An exhibit like this is very effective for storefronts or buildings. With LED lighting, the light sculptures are energy efficient, and turn on and off with a timer. Please note on the above web page link the photos by Third Dune Productions and the media coverage including Rocky Mountain PBS and Colorado Public Radio/Denverite

b. Lumonics Mind Spa: Thornton, Arts & Culture Center, Thornton, CO (2020)

c. Lumonics Mind Spa – Stretching the Body, Mind, and Spirit at the McNichols Civic Center Building (2018) which became the longest-running and best attended exhibit in the history of the building.
“Without a doubt, one of our most impactful shows EVER!!!!”
– Tariana Navas-Nieves, Director, Cultural Affairs, City and County of Denver

d. Lumonics Mind Spa at The Scarlet, Central City, CO (2016-2017)
Dorothy Tanner and Marc Billard created a Lumonics Mind Spa downstairs at The Scarlet, a former casino that was converted into an art center.

Individual light sculptures

There are links below of two videos that Lumonics member, Marc Billard, produced from The Tanner Retrospective at the indoor galleries of the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Englewood in 2017. This showcases the diversity of our light art archives.  More of the individual light art can be seen using the drop-down menu on the Exhibitions webpage.

c. During the pandemic, Lumonics was commissioned by Congregation Har HaShem in Boulder, CO to create a Hanukkah video,  projected on a screen in its parking lot that people could watch from their vehicles.

4. Outdoor Light Art, based on the designs of Mel and Dorothy Tanner
Lumonics is currently developing its first-ever permanent outdoor light sculpture.

A larger photograph can be seen on the Outdoor Light Art webpage. Please not that this sculpture is not yet built, and is simulated in an area in downtown Denver for perspective and artistic purposes only.
